Rankings are **illustrative**โyour family, visa, and treaty profile moves outcomes. We used the same simplified models as the site calculators.
Method
For each country we computed freelance net / gross at $60k, $120k, and $200k equivalent revenue (local currency converted notionally). Higher score = more cash kept before lifestyle spending.
Band 1 โ ~$60k equivalent
1. UAE (if visa costs low) โ cash-rich, admin drag only 2. Singapore (EP, 0 CPF) โ progressive but mild at this band 3. Switzerland (low canton) โ manageable if health assumptions tame 4. United Kingdom โ VAT + NI still bite but competitive 5. Spain/Italy/France โ social layers dominate
VERIFY: [AE](/ae/), [SG](/sg/), [CH](/ch/), [UK](/uk/), [ES](/es/) calculators.
Band 2 โ ~$120k equivalent
US (no high-tax state) and Australia (with super parity) converge; Germany health costs sting; Netherlands box 1 steep; Canada CPP double hurts.
Band 3 โ ~$200k+ equivalent
US (state + Medicare surcharges), UK (45p band), France (CE + IR), Sweden (top municipal) all punish top slices. UAE still shows cash advantage but CT compliance matters.
Non-tax factors that flip the podium
- Healthcare quality & premiums - Visa stability - Client currency (USD vs EUR) - Enforcement risk (autรณnomo inspections, IR35)
Verdict
There is no universal winner. Run paired calculators for your income + health spend, then read [digital nomad tax residency](/digital-nomad-tax-residency) before booking flights.
High earners: watch the surcharges
Above ~$180k equivalent, US Additional Medicare, UK taper, CA top brackets, and FR CE+IR can flip ordering. Switzerland wealth tax and Sweden municipal tops matter for asset-rich freelancers even when earned income looks similar.
Families and health
Germany and US family health premiums can erase a โlow taxโ headline. Singapore and UAE look cash-rich until you price international school and family LAMal.
Heuristic buckets at three income bands (freelance net / gross feel)
A = relatively more cash left in our models; C = heavier social + tax stack at that band. UAE assumes visa costs controlled; SG assumes EP without full CPF drag. Not legal advice.
